Ellen McDougall: Directing an Ensemble

What is it?
Ellen McDougall will lead a workshop on directing an ensemble. The session will examine her approach to working on Idomeneus, a formally challenging piece of work that reimagines a classical greek story. The session will involve practice and discussion, and parparticipants will learn ideas and approaches to working with an ensemble.

It is advised that participants should have seen the show at the Gate Theatre or read Idomeneus prior to taking the workshop.

This session is tailored to directors at an early stage of their careers, but is also open to anyone curious about ensemble directing.

Who is it with?
Ellen is a Director in the Secret Theatre Company at the Lyric. Directing credits include Show 4 (Lyric); Henry the Fifth and Antigone/Philoctetes (Unicorn Theatre); Telling Tales (Almeida Theatre); Ivan and the Dogs (ATC/Soho Theatre/Rustaveli Theatre - nominated for an Olivier Award 2011); A Kind of Alaska(JMK Award Runner Up).  Ellen was formerly Associate Artist at ATC. She trained as an assistant to Bijan Sheibani, Katie Mitchell, and Marianne Elliott and was Director in Residence at the NT Studio. She received an Arts Council International Development Award 2012, and the Runner Up Prize for the JMK Award 2008. www.ellenmcdougall.tumblr.com

Ellen McDougall – Artistic Director and Joint CEO (2017-2022)
Ellen is Artistic Director at the Gate Theatre. Previous credits at the Gate include – Dear Elizabeth (2019), Effigies of Wickedness (2018), The Unknown Island (2017) and Idomeneus (2014). Other credits include Our Town (Regents Open Air) and The Wolves (Stratford East); Othello (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe); the Lyric’s annual pantomime – Aladdin (2016) and Cinderella (2015); The Rolling Stone (Orange Tree Theatre and Manchester Royal Exchange); The Remains of Maisie Duggan (Abbey Theatre, Dublin); The Glass Menagerie (Headlong); Anna Karenina (Manchester Royal Exchange); Henry the Fifth (Unicorn Theatre); Glitterland (Secret Theatre/Lyric Hammersmith) and Ivan and the Dogs (Actors Touring Company/Soho Theatre) – nominated for an Olivier Award. Ellen was formerly part of the Secret Theatre Company at the Lyric Hammersmith. She trained as an assistant to Katie Mitchell and Marianne Elliott. She was awarded an International Artists’ Development Award (ACE/British Council) in 2012.
