What was it about this story that made you want to stage it at the Gate Theatre?

The Gate Theatre has always had a great reputation for radically reinventing classic stories and for making political work. So Al’s desire to taker this classic and turn it in to a parable about the relationship between the nation state and global capitalism really appealed to me. I also love how funny and moving the play is and how many great roles it has for actors – so it feels perfect for us!

How have you been preparing for rehearsals?

Lots of research! Rosie (the Designer) and I did a research trip to South Queensferry to visit the Forth Rail Bridge, and we walked around the area and took loads of photos. I have also been researching all of the other issues in the play – from mental health to Scottish politics.

Why did you want to take it to Edinburgh?

I love the Edinburgh Fringe festival and we have taken two successful shows there in the recent past – Grounded and The Christians. Also, given that this play is set in Edinburgh it felt like an absolutely perfect fit. I think the festival audience will really like it!

Why should people come to see the show?

Because it is beautifully written, very funny and very moving. If you want to see a really personal story about a man and a family then you will love this. If you want to see a really political story about how the forces of globalisation fundamentally change our individual and national identity then you will love this. If you want to see a talking dog, then you will love this.

Catch the previews of Diary of a Madman at the Gate Theatre, 28th-30th July.
